I received 1098-Ts from my college. Can I get tax return on tuition?

By | August 7, 2015

I received Form 1098-T from my college and was wondering if I could get tax return on tuition? I spent about $5,000 this year for tuition.

Although I am overseas in Korea right now, I am earning my 4 year degree online with University of Maryland, Univeristy College, which is an accredited institution (My classmates are mostly US military and government employees)

Any tax return possible? I have had no job over past 2 years and tuition is breaking my back.

If you don’t have a job and didn’t earn any money this year then you cannot get any money back. A tax deduction simply lowers the amount of tax you are required to pay. If you had a job you would be paying taxes with every paycheck. Every April when you file taxes you “settle up” with the government. If you’ve paid more than necessary then they send you a refund. If you haven’t paid enough then you pay them more. Tuition is deductible but if you didn’t work then you already owe zero taxes.
