graphic design school: does it matter?

By | September 17, 2015

Hi, I am currently just doing research on graphic design, on what schools and courses there are, and how well the career may be after graduating. I understand that it is your creativity that ultimately determines how well you are in the field of work. But when it comes down to the credentials, does it matter? Of course having the knowledge in programs and apps is a must, which will be taught in all graphic design courses…

Basically, can i save myself some cash and just attend my community college for an associates in graphic design, and be just as successful as the graduate from the Art Institute/Colleges? This is in matters of what my “clients” will look for: great quality of work, or where did i learn tricks of the trade from.

$100k for a bachelors in graphic design is A LOT of cash to be spending…when i can get the same knowledge, just not as “credited” college…kinda like how online degrees are to some people I guess.

I hope I made my question clear to understand….in short terms, Graphic Design, community college or art college/institutes???? I just want the degree, they cant teach you creativity, thats something natural :)

Thnx for reading, hope to hear something soon!!

Well I would definitely say to choose art college or major in art at a university with a great art program. Not only is your talent important, but you’ll be competing with other graphic designers for a job- and a bachelor’s is definitely more impressive in comparison to someone with an associate’s degree or a certificate.
You don’t need to spend $100k for a bachelor’s- maybe $6-8k a year and you can definitely get financial aid.

    hey.

you said “they cant teach you creativity” that’s 100% right, but they can teach you how to use it.
those graphic design school often are really worthy to go to… there’s a school in Italia/milano called IED and like some people there get to work for peugeot as they’re final project in the school (kids that are in car designs (but there are many more that just car designs there)) and often the work they get after that is alike.

i didnt quite understand the question but i hope this helps
