It’s been working for years, in one form or another. We used to call it “reading.”

I think in theory it CAN work, but the people who got into doing it first were mostly doing it because it brought them higher profits, which has mucked up the quality of most online programs. I also think that there are some things to be cautious about. I believe, for example, that one could learn history or statistics online. I do NOT believe that one could learn things like physical therapy (yes, there are online programs) or nursing without direct, supervised, patient contact. I also wouldn’t use it other than for nontraditional (older) or grad students, because most of the undergrads I’ve seen try it have done it because they thought it would be easier and actually put no effort into t. Finally, I think class size has to be addressed. Everyone I know who has taught online talks about how difficult it is to handle more than a few students per class, yet the for-profits try to pack them in. I think that in order to do it well, you have to acknowledge that your purpose can’t be to do it cheaply.
