can volunteer work help me get into the field?

By | September 2, 2015

I have been working in the defense and semiconductor industries as an engineer. I am getting my MBA and I am thinking about working in medical industry (business side), maybe in the hospitals (they need business people, right)? I have 1+ year before getting my degree.

Looking online for the jobs I would like, they all required experience in the field. It took me years to switch from defense to semiconductor, and that’s because I know someone!

You think by volunteering (I am good at interacting with people and solving problems) at a hospital in the next year or 2, someone might look at that as ‘having experience in the field’, or at least that hospital can write me a recommendation?

You may want to contact your college placement office. They may able to assist you to get an intern job at a hospital or a health plan in the finance department. I am glad you are already planning this ahead of many. If your college has a medical school, that will even better. They will have the inside connection. Sometime, just to get an part-time entry level in a health care provider’s finance department will definitely helpful. You may find out more than you initially thought of getting into finance, operation is also a good place to gain knowledge.
    Best of luck!

Volunteering will definitely help you get your foot in the door.

I’m skeptical that volunteering will really buy you much. I am not familiar enough with the business portion of healthcare to feel expert in the recommendation, but I think you would be better off trying to take a few classes that are specific to health care fields while you are doing your MBA. If you are able to get some sort of internship in the field, that would be your true foot in the door.

Heck ya! I volunteered at my local hospital, got to know who I needed to know, and when I graduated they gave me a job. But I am a nurse.
