Academy of Art University Credibility?

By | November 28, 2015

I’m currently enrolled at my first semester at the AoA taking online courses. They are accredited, and widely known for being an expensive college all for profit. Now, due to certain circumstances I was only able to attend college online my first semester and between the art institutes, savannah college of art only deals with masters online for animation, and the 3rd was academy of art university. So I owe A good amount of money as is now for my first semester. I was under the impression going in that the academy was fairly reputable, but these days reviewing, i’ve read a lot of mixed feelings going on. A lot of people who have good things to say are currently enrolled and all the others have dropped out. A lot of the arguments seem financially based as in someone couldn’t afford it so they got mad because the academy makes no attempt to aid them. But I need the real story, I need to know if this is a somewhat credible place that employers will respect if you work is on point. No arguments about the cost, what I and everyone else chooses to do to pay for their tuition is their business, I’m looking for a school that’s going to take me where I need to go.

As this is a for-profit school, its degrees are not well respected and will seldom lead to employment.

I am not an artist and have never attended art school. I have no financial interest in any school or college. I’m just stating the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I have not attended art school and I have no intention to.

I hear that Academy of Art University is very expensive. I don’t think it’s worth it. If you really want to be a graphics designer, I recommend looking at the state university system. San Francisco State University, etc. They are very cheap. You could also supplement your education with some community college classes.

On the side, you could do internships and read some how-to books on the latest and greatest graphics design software. The degree is important, but what’s more important is your experience and skills, which you can get from books and internships.

I definitely think you hit the nail right on the head. Most of the negative reviews 9 times out of 10 are from former students who had an issue with costs. With that said however, the Academy does provide numerous ways to fund your education. You should contact their Financial Aid department via email at [email protected] to see how they can help you. My friends and I who attend and have attended were all able to get help.

Costs aside, the bottom line though is that the Academy is definitely reputable and within the art and design industry, employers take students from the Academy very seriously since they know the Academy prepares their students for success. Just take a look at where alumni from the Academy work. We’re talking places such as Pixar, Apple, BMW, Gap, and the list goes on and on.
